What Even Is Operations? The Three Questions I Ask Every Small Business
One of the questions I get asked the most since launching Loud Haus is "what exactly is operations?" It's a fair question. Unlike marketing or accounting, operations isn't something people can easily picture, and most business owners know they need it without being entirely sure what it actually involves or when they should start paying attention to it.
Operations Is Simpler Than It Sounds
After fourteen years working behind the scenes in both large organisations and small businesses, I've come to realise operations isn't as complicated as it sounds. At its core, it's simply how your business gets work done. It's the processes you follow, the systems you rely on, and the way your team (whether that's you riding solo or ten people) works together to consistently deliver a great outcome.
The reason I love operations so much is because it helps you step back from the day-to-day and ask whether there's a better way to do this.
The Three Questions I Always Come Back To
Over the years, I've found myself asking the same three questions no matter what type of business I'm working with. They're simple, but they have a way of uncovering where time is being lost, where frustration is building, and where small improvements can make a really big difference.
The first question is about your processes. Who is doing what, and why?
Every business has processes, documented or not, and the real question is if they're intentional or if they've simply evolved over time without anyone checking in on them. If tasks are being duplicated, responsibilities are unclear, or people are doing things differently every time, that's a sign your processes need some attention.
The second question is about your systems. What tools or software are you using, and are you using them well?
I see a lot of businesses investing in great technology but only using a fraction of what it's capable of. Sometimes the answer isn't buying another platform. It's making better use of the one you already have, or choosing a system that's a better fit for the way your business operates.
The final question is about outcomes. Are you achieving the results you want?
At the end of the day, that's what matters. If your team is constantly stretched, projects are running behind, clients are experiencing delays, or you're spending hours every week on tasks that could be streamlined or automated, there's usually a reason for it. More often than not, the gap can be traced back to your processes, your systems, or the way the two work together.
Operations Isn't Just for Big Businesses
I don't see operations as something that's only relevant once you've built a big business. I think it's one of the foundations that helps businesses grow in the first place. When your operations are working well, your business feels calmer. Decisions become clearer, your team knows what's expected of them, and you spend less time putting out fires and more time focusing on the work that moves your business forward.
That's exactly why I started Loud Haus. I wanted to help small business owners simplify the way they work, not by overcomplicating things with more software or unnecessary processes, but by creating systems and ways of working that genuinely make their life easier.
Where to Start
If you've been reading this and quietly recognising a few gaps in your own business, that's completely normal. Every business has them, and often the hardest part is simply knowing where to start. Sometimes a fresh perspective is all it takes to turn a business that feels chaotic into one that feels intentional and ready for growth.
